  • Overview

Spangler Law focuses primarily on the monetization of patents and patent portfolios on behalf of its clients and has developed a national reputation as a "go to" firm for maximizing patent value. To that end, it has asserted intellectual property on behalf of patent holders in well over 100 cases. As a result of its strategic litigation, licensing, and negotiations, recoveries have totaled well over $200 million dollars.

    Strategy

Knowing the proper strategy for each client is critical to the success of maximizing its intellectual property.  Spangler Law has represented single patent holders as well as clients that have a portfolio of patents that they want to not only monetize, but also grow through acquisitions.  In addition, some clients have a large number of employees, products and resources such that its intellectual property is a fraction of the company’s assets.  The litigation strategy to be employed on behalf of each of these types of clients is often very different.

For some cases, a multi-party case with modest financial goals is appropriate.  In other cases, a “bet the company” type of case is the strategic goal.  With its prior successes, Spangler Law is able to analyze these goals to develop the base case strategy for every client.

    Staffing

Staffing plays a critical role in the success of any patent monetization program.  Using the same litigation team in every case is not always the most effective policy.  Spangler Law builds a team for its clients using attorneys from all over the country, including California, Texas, Rhode Island, Delaware, Michigan, etc.  Spangler Law has developed a large number of relationships with attorneys such that it is able to provide a litigation team unique for each case.

    Location

Where to file has become a critical question when seeking to enforce patent property.  While Spangler Law prefers to file in the Eastern District of Texas due to the experience of its judges, the speed of the docket, and local patent rules, Spangler Law will not hesitate to file in other jurisdictions across the state and country to best serve its client’s needs.

    More than Litigation

Spangler Law also believes its representation should extend beyond merely asserting a patent and therefore, when appropriate, assists its clients in the strategic acquisition of intellectual property that augments a current portfolio. Accordingly, retention of Spangler Law results in a representation that can extend far beyond simply retaining a standard litigation firm.
